Varicocele Excision

Hospitalization duration: 2 days
What is Varicocele Excision?
Varicocele excision is a surgical procedure performed to remove varicocele, which is a dilation of the veins of the spermatic cord. Varicocele can cause pain, swelling, and in some cases, infertility. This procedure is common in the treatment of varicoceles when the symptoms are bothersome or affect the patient’s quality of life, or if the varicocele is associated with fertility problems.
During surgery, a small incision is made in the groin area to identify and tie off the dilated veins, redirecting blood flow through normal veins. This reduces pressure on the affected veins and relieves varicocele symptoms.
Includes
- Medical Team
Surgery is performed by a specialized urology team, ensuring precision in the ligation of the affected veins and reducing the risk of complications.
- Laboratory
Includes complete pre-surgical studies to evaluate the patient’s general health and confirm that he or she is in optimal condition for the intervention.
- Office
Chest imaging examination using a telescopic chest to ensure that the patient does not have respiratory or cardiac problems that could affect the safety of the anesthesia and the procedure.
- Preoperative evaluation by Internal Medicine + EKG
A detailed evaluation performed by an internist and an electrocardiogram (EKG) to ensure that the patient is in adequate condition for surgery.
- Postoperative visits
Follow-up after surgery to monitor recovery, ensure that the wound is healing properly, and confirm the reduction of symptoms.
- Pathology study
In some cases, the affected tissue is sent to pathology for analysis, which is especially useful if there are additional abnormalities that require evaluation.
Preparing for surgery
For varicocele excision, the medical team usually tells the patient:
- Fasting for at least 6 to 8 hours before surgery if general anesthesia will be used.
- Discontinuation of certain medications, especially those that affect coagulation, under the doctor’s instructions.
- Wearing comfortable clothing and proper preparation to facilitate postoperative mobilization, especially upon returning home.
Recovery
Recovery from varicocele excision is relatively quick, although the treated area may be somewhat tender for the first few days. Recommendations for recovery include:
- Avoid strenuous physical activity for at least 2 weeks to allow for proper healing.
- Keep the wound clean and dry and follow your medical team’s instructions to prevent infection.
- Use a scrotal support, if recommended, to reduce discomfort and aid in recovery.
Most patients can return to their daily activities within a week, although they should avoid strenuous exercise until medical clearance is received.
Risks and Complications
Varicocele excision is a safe procedure, but as with all surgery, there are some risks, including:
- Infection at the incision site, which may require treatment with antibiotics.
- Hematoma formation or fluid buildup in the treated area.
- Recurrence of varicocele, although this is rare if the procedure is performed correctly.
The medical team provides specific instructions to minimize these risks and ensure a smooth recovery.
Frequently Asked Questions
The surgery is performed under anesthesia, so the patient does not experience pain during the procedure. There may be some pain or discomfort in the treated area afterwards, which is usually controlled with painkillers.
Initial healing is usually complete in 1 to 2 weeks, although full recovery may take slightly longer depending on the patient's activity level.
Recurrence is rare, but can occur in some cases. Regular medical follow-up helps detect and treat any recurrence in a timely manner.
