Endoscopy

Cost: $500 USD
Type of procedure: Outpatient procedure

What is Endoscopy?

Endoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that allows your doctor to examine the inside of your upper digestive tract, which includes your esophagus, stomach, and duodenum (the first part of your small intestine). This procedure is performed using an endoscope, a thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end, which is inserted through your mouth. Endoscopy is essential for identifying problems such as inflammation, ulcers, bleeding, blockages, or even tumors in the upper digestive system.

During the procedure, the endoscope transmits real-time images to a monitor, allowing your doctor to view the inside of your digestive tract. If any abnormalities are found, biopsies can be taken for further analysis.

Includes

  • Medical Team
Endoscopy is performed by a team of gastroenterology specialists, ensuring that the procedure is safe and that as much diagnostic information as possible is obtained.

  • Pathology Study
If a tissue sample (biopsy) is taken during endoscopy, it is sent to the pathology laboratory for microscopic analysis. This allows any abnormalities in the cells to be identified and helps to confirm or rule out specific diagnoses, such as infections or neoplastic diseases (cancer).

Preparing for the procedure

For endoscopy, it is essential that the stomach is empty to allow for a clear and accurate view. Preparation usually includes:

  • Fast for at least 6 to 8 hours before the procedure to ensure that the stomach is completely empty.
  • Avoid certain medications that may interfere with the procedure, as directed by your doctor.

It is important to follow all preparation instructions, as an empty stomach reduces risks and makes visualization easier.

Recovery

Endoscopy is an outpatient procedure and the patient can usually return home the same day. Because mild sedation is used, recovery is quick, but it is advisable to:

  • Avoid driving or activities that require concentration for the rest of the day due to the effects of sedation.
  • Rest and avoid heavy meals immediately after the procedure, starting with a light diet if your stomach is sensitive.
  • Notify your doctor if you experience symptoms such as persistent sore throat, fever, or abdominal pain, which are uncommon but should be evaluated.

Risks and Complications

Endoscopy is a safe procedure, but like any intervention, it has some risks, although they are minimal. These may include:

  • Pain or discomfort in the throat due to insertion of the endoscope, which usually goes away within a few hours.
  • Reactions to sedation, which the medical team monitors carefully to ensure patient safety.
  • Mild bleeding if a biopsy is taken, although this usually stops without the need for further treatment.

The medical team takes all necessary precautions to minimize these risks and ensure a safe and comfortable experience.
