Cholecystectomy with Biliary Tract Exploration

Cost: $5,620 USD
Hospitalization duration: 2 days

What is Cholecystectomy with Bile Duct Exploration?

Cholecystectomy with bile duct exploration is an advanced surgical procedure in which the gallbladder is removed and, at the same time, the bile ducts are explored to detect and, if necessary, remove any obstructions, such as gallstones. This procedure is especially necessary when it is suspected that the bile ducts may be blocked, which could cause complications such as cholangitis (bile duct infection) or pancreatitis.

During surgery, the medical team uses laparoscopic techniques to remove the gallbladder and carefully examine the bile ducts. If stones or any other obstruction are found, they are removed immediately to restore bile flow and prevent further complications.

Includes

  • Medical Team
The procedure is performed by a team of surgeons with experience in laparoscopic surgery and exploration of the bile duct to ensure a precise and safe intervention.

  • Laboratory
Includes complete pre-surgical studies and liver function tests (LFTs) to evaluate the patient’s general health, liver function and rule out problems that could complicate the procedure.

  • Office
Imaging studies such as chest X-ray and abdominal ultrasound (US), which allow the medical team to confirm the diagnosis and plan the surgery appropriately.

  • Preoperative Evaluation by Internal Medicine + EKG
A thorough evaluation by an internist and an electrocardiogram (EKG) to ensure that the patient is in optimal condition and reduce risks during the procedure.

  • Postoperative Visits
During the recovery process, the patient will be followed by the medical team to ensure proper healing and verify that there are no complications in the bile duct.

  • Pathology Study
The removed gallbladder and, in some cases, bile duct tissue are sent to the pathology laboratory for detailed analysis. This study can rule out additional diseases and confirm the diagnosis.

Preparing for surgery

For cholecystectomy with bile duct exploration, the patient should follow these instructions:

  • Fasting for at least 6 to 8 hours before the procedure.
  • Discontinuation of certain medications, especially anticoagulants, to avoid bleeding risks.
  • Avoid tobacco and alcohol consumption in the days leading up to the procedure, as these can interfere with recovery.

Recovery

Recovery from cholecystectomy with bile duct exploration usually takes a little longer than from a standard laparoscopic cholecystectomy. During this time:

  • Avoid strenuous physical exertion for at least 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Follow a low-fat diet for the first few weeks, as your body will need time to adjust to the loss of your gallbladder.
  • Take care of your incisions by keeping them clean and dry, following the instructions of your medical team.

Most patients can return to normal activities within 1 to 2 weeks, although full recovery time will depend on each case and the patient’s response to treatment.

Risks and Complications

Although the procedure is safe, some of the risks associated with cholecystectomy with bile duct exploration include:

  • Infection at the incision site or in the bile ducts.
  • Bleeding or hematoma formation at the surgical site.
  • Injury to the bile ducts or nearby blood vessels due to the complex nature of the surgery.
  • Pancreatitis in rare cases, as a reaction to manipulation of the bile ducts.

The medical team will minimize these risks through a postoperative follow-up protocol and by providing the patient with specific care and recommendations.
